- I recently have received some Microsoft Word files that I can't open. Is something wrong with my computer?

Most likely your computer is fine. The 2007 Microsoft Word program saves files with a different extension, ".docx" rather than the common ".doc". For example, a file that would have been saved as "My_Word_File.doc" will now be saved as "My_Word_File.docx". Note that this does not have anything to do with the version of Windows that you run-- Some people mistakenly thought this problem was caused by Windows Vista because they had recently started using Windows Vista. Unless you have the latest version of Microsoft Office or Word, you will not be able to open the new files.
There are several things you can do to be able to get around this problem. Perhaps the easiest solution is to purchase a new version of Word, especially if you receive and need to work on Word files frequently. Microsoft Office products. Microsoft offers a Compatability Pack that allows you to open the 2007 files with an older version of Office and save them in a previous version. You can find information about it here. Another possible solution is to have the person who sent you the file use the "Save As" option to save the Word file in a previous version of Word.
